Mobile Banking Updates - Sept 8
Wells Fargo mobile guru Steve Ellis to keynote TabletBiz conference & expo
"The tablet event of the year kicks off November 13 in New York with the executive who helped Wells Fargo transition into online and mobile banking. Steve Ellis is a bit of a mobile guru when it comes to mobile banking. The fast pace of Wells Fargo’s early move into online and mobile financial services, including tablets was due in large part to his commitment to fostering workplace creativity. Ellis is executive vice president and group head of the Wells Fargo Wholesale Services Group, the commercial side of the company that includes commercial loan services, customer analytics, risk management, and mobile and social media strategies. Ellis was instrumental in launching Wells Fargo’s Commercial Electronic Office (CEO) Internet portal in 2000."
6 Tips for Safer Smartphone Banking
"More than half of American adults have a smartphone today, and more of us are using them to check balances, pay bills, deposit checks and conduct other banking business. A March report from the Federal Reserve found that slightly more than a quarter of cell-phone owners and nearly half of smartphone owners use their devices for banking, and that number is only expected to grow. Mobile banking can be a great time-saver, but it also presents the risk that you could have sensitive account data — and by extension, your money — stolen if you’re not careful."
New perks make banking easier
"Paying your bills and taking care of other banking chores is a pain. Even more painful: the fees you’ll face if you don’t do them when you need to. But here’s good news from ShopSmart, the shopping magazine from the publisher of Consumer Reports: Banks have introduced five services that make those tasks easier and more rewarding."
moTwin Announces Round of Funding, Adds New Investor
"French enterprise mobile app developer moTwin has closed an additional $2.7M in financing from new investor Sigma Gestion, as well as previous partners Seventure Partners and Naxicap Partners. This brings the total capital raised by moTwin to $7.3M, underscoring the opportunity for unique technology that can bridge user experience and cloud integration in mobile apps. The new funds will be used for international expansion, including adding additional sales and support resources to its Palo Alto office."

RBS Citizens Tops In Mobile Banking Ratings
"Mobile banking apps from RBS Citizens Bank, based in Providence, came in tops with customers in surveys by Xtreme Labs and Javelin. The bank’s iOS app came in at the highest score with 4.5 stars and 93 percent favorable review and its Android app placed second, just behind USAA, with 4.5 stars and 97 percent good reviews."
Big Data and Payments Drive Loyalty in Business Banking.
"In the 'consumer edition' of the blog I suggested that banks can reinvigorate their payments brand and influence customer loyalty by integrating incentives and offers to their payments solutions. The premise is that banks are missing out on an opportunity to become more influential in where people shop and what they buy, rather than just how they pay. Offers can be driven by analytics into a combination of historical payments information and big data analysis of demographics, location positioning and peer group analysis. Such a strategy requires more than an offers solution, or a mobile banking app."

Mobile banking fraud
"A number of recent news reports have chronicled the use of mobile money transfer services by miscreants to carry out extortionist activities. Fraudulent activities, in whatever form or shape, are bad. At the same time, we need to take things into perspective. Not doing so may result in raising an alarm in people’s minds. That would be harmful for any product or service, but especially for a service that has the potential for broader socio-economic benefits while it is in the infant stage of development."
Uganda: Banks Stretch Hours As Mobile Competition Bites
"You have an emergency late in the night. Your bank is miles away from your residence, so you can't access any money. "Technology will be the differentiator for us and we will focus on smart mobile banking. It is the most cost-effective solution. The cost of one physical transaction is Rs 40-60, and through a mobile is Rs 1-1.5. An ATM transaction costs Rs 15-20. Of our six lakh villages, only 5 percent are covered by commercial bank branches. Forty-six per cent of the population is still unbanked. At the same time, almost everyone has mobile phones. They access the internet through the mobile phone."

Mobile Banking Updates - Aug 1
What Are the Best and Worst Mobile Banking Apps?
"There’s something perversely satisfying about depositing a check in bed. While in a recumbent position, I’ve been known to whip out my iPhone, launch my bank’s app, snap a photo of the check’s back and front, type in the amount, and boom. My money wings its way into my account while I return to reading Entertainment Weekly on my iPad. Alas, not all mobile banking apps make it that easy. And a new report from Xtreme Labs, entitled the “U.S. Banking Apps Report: Customer Reviews,” shows that some banks are doing are a better job than others with their mobile apps."
FFIEC may be prepping guidance for mobile banking
"The word going around is that the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council could introduce guidelines on mobile banking security within the next 12 months. But while that particular aspect of mobile payments may be in the regulatory eye, experts do not expect strictures to be more broadly applied."
Mobile Banking Trends: Find Out What is Hot and How to Stay Protected
"The security precautions for smartphone and tablet banking are the same as those for your PC. Smartphones are not inherently more risky, except for one important thing: It’s a heck of a lot easier to lose a phone than a computer. The likeliest way for a hacker to access your bank account information is if they have your phone in their hands. To guard against this, always maintain a password protected system, and if you have to, use security software to wipe the phone clean so valuable data can’t be stolen."
Is Technology Making an Impact in the Banking Industry?
"With TV, music and shopping available with the merest swipe of a screen, it's vital that the banking industry adapts to meet the needs of tech-savvy customers. Considering the focus on the banking industry of late, and the much-talked-about state of the economy, the banking industry's ability to adapt to changing technology could be vital to its recovery from the economic downturn."
More from F.N.B.: mobile banking update
"Earlier this month, I wrote about how F.N.B. Corp.’s online banking tools played into its acquisition strategy. F.N.B. (NYSE:FNB) upgraded its offerings late last year, adding bill payment and remote deposits to its mobile-banking capabilities. Executives talked strategy but were holding off on numbers: I figure CEO Vince Delie might give a progress report during the second-quarter earnings call Wednesday and I was right."
Anywhere/Anytime Access to Online Banking Solutions Driving Increased Uptake of Mobile Platforms, Says ABI Research
"ABI Research forecasts that cumulative online ID and authentication shipments into the banking market vertical will total 1.6 billion in 2018; an increase of 945% when compared to 2012. Cumulative shipments include secure USB tokens, standalone OTP generators, portable smart card readers, and mobile device software applications. Of the 2018 shipment total ABI Research forecasts that mobile software applications will account for 81% of the total 2018, which only accounted for a mere 22% in 2012."
Founders Federal Credit Union Enhances Online, Mobile Banking with Fiserv Solutions
"Fiserv, Inc. (FISV), a leading global provider of financial services technology solutions, today announced that Founders Federal Credit Union (Founders), a $1.6 billion credit union headquartered in Lancaster, S.C., has expanded its relationship with Fiserv in order to enhance its members' digital banking experience. Founders has deployed Corillian Online and Mobiliti from Fiserv to deliver feature-rich online, mobile and tablet banking services."

Mobile Banking Updates - June 9
The Quest for Simplicity in Mobile App Design
"We heard it again and again from Charaka Kithulegoda and other bankers honored in our Mobile Banker of the Year package this year: simplicity and ease of use are the keys to sound mobile banking app design. 'People don't live to bank, financial institutions exist to serve their needs,' observes Hari Gopalkrishnan, a managing director at Bank of America."
You Talking to Me? How Voice Is Revolutionizing Mobile Banking
"Want to race? Pull up your mobile banking app, enter bill pay data, click pay. I'll use my voice to log in - no keying in the password - and simply tell the app whom to pay, how much. Who will be faster? Who will get the job done with less irritation? And with none of the miskeyed entries that turn so much mobile banking into an exercise in angst."
The 5 Biggest Pain Points for Mobile Banking
"I just attended and presented at the Mobile Banking and Conference Summit in Miami. Now in its seventh year (mobile banking existed in 2006?!?), the conference was an exploration of how financial institutions are being influenced by, and taking advantage of, the mobile channel and mobile technology. A few hundred attendees, including mostly high-level executive, product, technology and marketing folks were there."
Finance on the fly with convenience of mobile banking
"'App. Snap. Deposit.' Sound easy? It is. Banking has become as simple as one, two, three. Manage your money on-the-go, anywhere, anytime, in the click of a button. Check account balances, recent transaction history, transfer funds and locate nearby branches and ATMs – all on your mobile device for free. The way of the future is now."
U.S. Bank's Badarinath Isn't Shy About Testing the Mobile Waters
"'In banking, there are few sustainable sources of competitive advantage,' says Niti Badarinath, senior vice president and head of mobile banking at U.S. Bank, Minneapolis. 'Product innovation is probably not a place where banks can truly distinguish themselves, especially in consumer banking. Pricing is also not a source of sustainable competitive advantage: you can change some rates here and there, but it's not something you can keep differentiating yourself on. Then it comes down to, how easy are you going to make it for your customers to access and manage their finances?'"
The ROI of Mobile Banking
"Today, the general consensus is that mobile banking capabilities are table stakes for financial institutions. While it's certainly true that consumers are coming to expect mobile banking, it should not be regarded as just another cost of doing business. Mobile banking actually delivers a compelling return on investment. Once a bank or credit union has the foundation of mobile banking in place, the addition of services like person-to-person payments and remote deposit capture can provide new revenue sources, as research indicates consumers will pay for such convenience-enhancing features."
BBVA Compass adds picture bill pay capabilities to its iPhone mobile banking app
"BBVA Compass today expanded its iPhone app with Picture Bill Pay, allowing customers to pay bills and add payees by taking pictures of their paper bills with their iPhones. 'We wanted our app to be as robust as possible since nearly 35 percent of those who take advantage of mobile banking manage their finances exclusively through their apps,' said Alejandro Carriles, director of self-service channels at BBVA Compass. 'Innovative and fun features like this allow us to improve and simplify those customers' experiences.'"

DeMarrais: FDIC tips for safe mobile banking
"When's the last time you went into a bank? For many of us, trips to a local bank were once near the top of our weekly to-do list, but technology has changed that dramatically, allowing us to do most of our banking from the convenience of home or office whenever it suits us. Banker's hours? They're no longer an issue when you combine direct deposit, ATMs and online banking. Bank visits have been limited largely to opening accounts, applying for loans, resolving disputes or looking for a calendar."
Federal Reserve Board Survey Shows Growth in Mobile Banking and Payments
"Americans are increasingly using their mobile phones to access bank accounts, credit cards, and other financial accounts, according to the Federal Reserve Board’s latest report on mobile financial services. This represents a significant increase from 21 percent in December 2011 for mobile phone users and 42 percent for smartphone users. Just last week, the second largest bank in the United States, Bank of America, announced that its customers are logging into the bank’s mobile platform more than its online platform. It’s quite possibly the most significant innovation across the industry since the ATM."
Mobile Banking Plays Critical Role In Customer Loyalty While Tablet Apps Lag Behind
"A lack of banking apps optimized for tablets leaves consumers to resort to a cruder mobile web experience. According to a study from Yodlee Interactive, mobile banking may keep loyalty high while physical branches continue their decline. 71% of mobile bankers are either satisfied or very satisfied with their bank’s mobile and web offerings. One in three of those who use mobile banking now view their mobile banking experience as a reason why they stay with their bank."

Augmented Reality in FS - got your goggles?
"‘Mobile banking’ is not a very precise term. Today, we know it as meaning using your mobile phone for banking. However, back in the late 1990s, all that it meant was SMS banking. If your bank was particularly advanced, it may also have meant a WAP-based mobile banking service. It has only been since the launch of smartphones in the mid-2000s, that ‘mobile banking’ has come to mean a browser- or mobile app-based banking service."
Mobile Services Compared: Which Banks Are Setting the Trend?

As smartphones become necessities for Americans, banks have increased their focus on mobile banking, especially mobile banking applications. With time, more and more consumers will consider mobile banking features in their decisions to choose a new bank."

Mobile Banking Updates - Mar 21
Malauzai Software Launches Mobile Banking SmartApp for iPad
"Malauzai Software Inc., a provider of mobile banking SmartApps for community financial institutions, has launched its mobile banking app for iPad devices. The technology is currently in use by several institutions, including Huntsville, Ala.-based Worthington Federal Bank. Malauzai’s iPad SmartApp takes advantage of the larger tablet screen to introduce enhanced navigation capabilities to the mobile banking experience. Accounts are now displayed on scrolling tiles instead of lists, and users can have more than one workspace open at a time. For instance, users can view transaction history while making a transfer."
Mobile virus writers pay to Google Play
"An explosion in mallicious software -malware - targeting Android smartphone users is being fueled in part by a budding market for mobile virus creation kits, as well as a brisk market for hijacked or fraudulent developer accounts on Google's app store Google Play that can be used to disguise malware as legitimate apps for sale. I recently encountered an Android malware developer on a semi-private underground forum who was actively buying verified developer accounts at Google Play for $US100 apiece. Google charges just $US25 for Android developers who wish to sell their applications through the Google Play marketplace, but it also requires the accounts to be approved and tied to a specific domain. The buyer in this case was offering $US100 for sellers willing to part with an active, verified Google Play account tied to a dedicated server."
Will mobile banking fees turn away consumers? - Mobile Commerce Daily
"PNC bank is reportedly considering charging customers a fee when they use their mobile phones to deposit a check, a service that is now free. One of the attractions of mobile banking for consumers has been convenience but the fact that these services are typically free has also played a role. The question is whether by tacking a fee onto mobile deposits, this might slow the adoption of mobile banking."
Tablet users expected to make up 19 percent of mobile banking customers in 2017
One in four tablet users is predicted to pay bills via the device by 2017, according to a report by Juniper Research. Adoption of bill presentment and payment, or BPP, transactional banking by tablet users will be higher than by smartphone users, the report found. Tablet users are expected to make up 19 percent of mobile banking customers in 2017, or 200 million users, up from 9 percent of mobile banking customers in 2013."
Pros and Cons of Mobile Banking
"Many major commercial banks are now offering consumers the choice to make deposits, send money, and perform other routine tasks using a mobile app. Bank customers can now use a smartphone or tablet for basic transactions like check deposits and bill payments, making it easier to keep an eye on finances without a trip to the ATM."
Fiserv integrates P2P service into mobile banking platform
"Financial services technology provider Fiserv Inc. is looking to expand the use of its Popmoney peer-to-peer payments product. The company announced today that it will be integrating the P2P feature into its Mobiliti mobile banking platform. With the integration, P2P payments can be made directly from a user's mobile banking account. Additionally, users of P2P payments can manage payments and view transaction history from within their mobile banking application."
As Mobile Reshapes Payments Business, Fiserv Combines P2P Payments & Mobile Banking Offerings
"As consumers become more comfortable and engaged with the concepts of mobile wallets, mobile payments and other forms of digital payments transactions, the financial technology community is taking notice. For example, more than 16 billion person-to-person payments are made each year, according to McKinsey & Company. A 2012 Forrester Research report found that 51% of tablet banking users and 46% of mobile banking users would like to make person-to-person payments via their devices. Even though there is still considerable uncertainty about how things will play out in terms of standards, revenues and regulation no one wants to be left out of the race to dominate the mobile money space."

New Research Reveals China’s Potential for a Mobile Banking Revolution
"Researcher Patrick Ainslie calls it ‘handshakes over hetongs’ (the Mandarin word for ‘contract’). It’s an opportunity, an open challenge even, to reach 250 million people in China and potentially transform their lives. Ainslie is part of a team of researchers at New York-based social enterprise Reboot, which recently published a study, based on extensive field interviews, on designing financial services for China’s marginalized groups."
The Moving Target of Mobile Banking Service
"When my colleagues and I talk about mobile banking, we are struck by how many banks operating in mature markets could learn from Africa. Despite the infrastructure challenges – and in some ways because of them – many African banks display a real commitment to innovation in service. Standard Bank of South Africa, for example, is working to provide “inclusive banking” – banking services for the previously unbanked. These customers may not own smartphones, but they can now deposit money and pay for utilities using the phones they have."
Mozido Appeals To Politicos For Action On Mobile Banking
"Gregory Corona, president and chief executive officer of Mozido LLC, has reached out to two top administration officials to run interference for his company with the Bank of Jamaica over a mobile banking deal with the credit union league that has been stalled by regulatory review. Texas-based Mozido operates a local subsidiary, Mozido Jamaica, managed by Kavin Hewitt."

'The camera is critical. If you look at the kinds of growth in mobile banking over the first couple of years, it was about the basics of mobile banking. But what's really exciting me and my team for the next couple of years is figuring out how to take advantage of the ability of the mobile device,' says Brian Pearce, senior vice president and head of the retail mobile channel in the digital channels group at Wells Fargo."

Mobile Banking Updates - Dec 27
Why Internet and Mobile Banking Can Be Out of Sync
"In the continuing discussion around mobile banking as a standalone channel, a new dimension has emerged: the platform’s parity with Internet banking. Mobile banking apps, especially native apps, are evolving at a rate higher than Internet banking. Not surprisingly, cool, new technologies are geared more towards a mobile platform. The creativity in this particular space is, in part, due to the overwhelming demand for the service. Consumers' use of mobile banking rose dramatically in 2011, jumping by 63% to 57 million U.S. adults from 35 million in 2010, according to Javelin Strategy & Research."
Mobile banking will take a big leap, bypass Net banking
"The banking sector has seen a conscious shift from corporate lending to retail lending in the past few months. S.S. Mundra, executive director, Union Bank of India, believes that retail lending is the best business strategy for any bank in the current market conditions. In conversation with Mint Money, Mundra talks about why low-cost products are not marketed well and how the government-run bank is coming to terms with technology, while trying to maintain a balance between traditional and new-age banking."
Fiserv publishes mobile ROI white paper
"Financial services technology provider Fiserv Inc. has published a free white paper that discusses the value FIs can realize from their mobile banking channel by taking mobile beyond basic services. The white paper is titled 'Next Generation Mobile Banking: Transactions Increase Potential Return on Investment.'"
Credit Unions in Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas Add Mobile Banking
"Three credit unions — the $126.5 million Municipal Employees Credit Union of Oklahoma City, the $46 million Central Communications Credit Union of Independence, Mo., and the $192.5 million Texell Credit Union of Temple, Texas — have announced their adoption of mobile banking services."
